Parts quieter than the threshold and longer than the minimum duration are cut out; the chosen padding stays around them so it keeps sounding natural. With 'Shorten silences' a fixed length of every long silence remains, for a conversation that should keep its pauses. A higher threshold (towards -20) = more aggressive cutting. 'Mute the silences' leaves everything in place and turns each silence into true silence (the length stays the same, handy with a video); 'Each part separately' saves what lies between the silences as separate files in a zip.
