Connect an AI assistant

Connect your AI assistant to Downloadlink

Ask your assistant in plain words for a download link or a file request link, to see which links are about to expire, or to find the right tool. No API key needed: you log in to Downloadlink and choose what it may do.

The address for your assistant

https://downloadlink.nl/mcp

Connecting an assistant is included in every paid plan, just like API keys. You log in to Downloadlink while connecting. Already have an account? Log in

Which transfers do I have on downloadlink.nl?

Claude

Connected in three steps

You add Downloadlink once as a connector. Claude can then use it on claude.ai, in the desktop app and in the app on your phone.

Claude on the web, on your computer and your phone

Tested by us
  1. 1

    Add the connector

In Claude, open Customize or Settings Connectors and click Add custom connector.

Type Downloadlink as the name and paste the address as the URL. Leave Sign in now and Use Claude's published identity as they are: they're already set correctly. Click Add.

    Open Connectors in Claude ↗
  2. 2

    Log in and allow it

Next to Downloadlink, click Connect. You arrive at Downloadlink: log in, choose what Claude may do and click Allow.

  3. 3

    Just ask

Turn on Downloadlink in a chat with the + below the input field, under Connectors, and ask what you want. Before Claude creates or changes anything, it asks for your approval (Needs approval).

Other assistants

Using a different assistant?

The same address works in any assistant that can add a remote MCP server with sign-in. We tested Claude and Claude Code ourselves; for the others the steps follow their documentation.

Claude Code

Tested by us

Claude Code works in the terminal and can reach the files on your computer, so it can also turn a file into a download link.

  1. Paste this command into your terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user downloadlink https://downloadlink.nl/mcp
  2. Log in with this command, or type /mcp in Claude Code. Your browser opens Downloadlink: log in and click Allow.
    claude mcp login downloadlink
  3. Done. The command claude mcp list then shows downloadlink as Connected.

With --scope user the connection works in every folder. If you already connected Downloadlink in Claude on the web and log in to Claude Code with the same Claude account, it is already there.

ChatGPT

Following OpenAI's guide
  1. Open ChatGPT's plugins.
    Open plugins in ChatGPT ↗
  2. Click the plus button and choose Add custom MCP server.
  3. Enter Downloadlink as the name and a description such as: file sharing and tools from downloadlink.nl. Paste the address above under Connection.
  4. For authentication, choose sign-in (OAuth), read the warning and click I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin.
  5. You arrive at Downloadlink: log in, choose what ChatGPT may do and click Allow.
  6. Done. In a chat, type @ and choose Downloadlink.

Whether you may add your own servers depends on your ChatGPT subscription and your workspace settings. These steps follow OpenAI's guide; we have not yet gone through them ourselves with a ChatGPT account. Not working? Let us know

VS Code with GitHub Copilot

Following Microsoft's guide
  1. Click the button: VS Code opens and asks whether you want to add Downloadlink.
    Open in VS Code
Or, in VS Code, choose MCP: Add Server in the Command Palette, then HTTP, and paste the address above.
  2. VS Code asks whether it may sign in to Downloadlink. Allow it: your browser opens Downloadlink, log in and click Allow.
  3. Done. Downloadlink's tools are now available in the VS Code chat.

Cursor

Following Cursor's guide
  1. Click the button: Cursor opens and asks whether you want to add Downloadlink.
    Open in Cursor
Or put this in the file .cursor/mcp.json in your home folder:
    { "mcpServers": { "downloadlink": { "url": "https://downloadlink.nl/mcp" } } }
  2. In Cursor, click the sign-in button next to Downloadlink. Your browser opens Downloadlink: log in and click Allow.

This works in the Cursor app on your computer. Cursor on the web and Cursor's agents use a return address that Downloadlink does not allow.

Do you want your assistant to use the tools itself as well? Working with the tools needs the local helper: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code on a computer with Chrome or Edge. In claude.ai on the web, the app on your phone or ChatGPT on the web the assistant cannot run the tools itself; there it points you to the tool. About the local helper

What your assistant can do next

When connecting, you choose what it may do. After that, just ask in your own words.

View

On by default when you connect.

  • Your account: which account is connected and which plan you have.
  • Your transfers: the name, the number of files, the downloads and when they expire.
  • One transfer in detail: the files and, per recipient, whether they downloaded.
  • Received files: what arrived through your file request links, with a download link per file.
  • The right tool: it searches all the tools on the site and gives you the link; the tool runs in your browser.
  • Your shared folders: which folders you have, with the number of files and the link to the portal.
  • What is in a folder: the directories and files, with their version.
  • What you miss: it can pass on to us what is missing or could be better.
  • Who downloaded: per transfer the downloads and, per recipient, whether they fetched it; with a paid plan also the delivery proof.
  • Your address book: your contacts and send groups.
  • Your branding: how your download page and your tools look.
  • Your data: the overview of your account's export.
  • Signing: your signature requests and their status.
  • Your week planning: who works on what, the deadlines and who has room (with the planning module).
  • What changed: what came in and happened since the last time, for a fixed routine of your assistant.

For example

  • “Which Downloadlink account is connected, and which plan do I have?”
  • “Which of my download links expire this week?”
  • “How often has my latest transfer been downloaded?”
  • “Who has already downloaded my latest download link?”
  • “Which files did my customer send through the file request link?”
  • “Find a tool to make a PDF smaller.”You get a link to the tool; it works in your browser.
  • “Which drawings are in the folder of the New building project?”

Create

You turn this on yourself when you connect.

  • A download link from text: it puts your text in a file and shares it.
  • A download link for a file: it uploads the file and turns it into a transfer.
  • A file request link: someone uses it to send files to you.
  • Extend: keep a download link valid for longer.
  • Revoke: turn off the link of a transfer.
  • Change: the title, a password or the download limit of a transfer.
  • Clean up: delete a transfer, or turn a revoked link back on.
  • Manage file request links: give them a name, close them and remove received files.
  • Update your address book: save or remove contacts and send groups.
  • Adjust your branding: the look of your download page and of your tools.
  • Reminders: turn the email that a transfer is about to expire on or off.
  • Cancel a request: cancel a pending signature request.
  • A shared folder: a new portal for a client, with a style and its own address.
  • Directories in a folder: it creates the directories you name.
  • Files in a folder: it puts files into a directory; the same name becomes a new version.
  • Remove from a folder: to the folder's trash; you restore it on the website.
  • Set up a transfer: a message on the download page, a link of your own, only verified recipients, an email on download and reminders.
  • Set up a folder: name, welcome text, style, colour, view, cover, own address and comments.

For example

  • “Put this text in a file and make a download link for it.”
  • “Make a download link for report.pdf in this folder.”In Claude Code, which can reach the files on your computer.
  • “Make a link my client can use to send files to me.”
  • “Extend my latest download link by a week.”
  • “Turn off the link of my latest transfer.”
  • “Set a download limit of 3 on my latest transfer.”
  • “Create a shared folder for the New building project, with the Construction project style.”
  • “Put a welcome text on the folder New build and make the photo of the facade the cover.”

Downloadlink marks Create as a write action. That's why Claude on claude.ai asks for your approval first (Needs approval) before it creates or changes anything.

A file request link in one sentence

Your client needs to send you drawings? Ask for a file request link. What your client uploads there, you find under Received files.

Create a file request link for the drawings
Approval requested · Allowed
Downloadlink: create file request link

Done. Send your client this link: downloadlink.nl/in/…

What they upload there, you'll see under Received files.

Security and privacy

You stay in control

You choose what it may do

You log in to Downloadlink yourself and choose the account. View is on, Create you turn on yourself.

Never emails on your behalf

Through this connection an assistant cannot send email, not even with Create.

Revoke at any time

On your account page under Connected assistants. A connection also expires when you change your password or turn two-step verification on or off. Go to Connected assistants

Your files stay in Europe

Storage in Europe: your files are kept at Backblaze B2 in the eu-central-003 region; the service itself runs at Render in Frankfurt.

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost?

Connecting an assistant is included in every paid plan, just like API keys. View the plans

Do I need an API key?

No. You log in to Downloadlink and click Allow. Developers can also use an API key. Technical details for developers

Can my assistant see what's in my files?

Not by itself. Through the connection it sees the names, the number of files, the downloads and the expiry date of your transfers, not what is in them. If you ask it for files that arrived through a file request link, it gives a download link that works for an hour and counts as your download; whoever opens that link gets the file, including an assistant that fetches files from the internet.

Can it also merge a PDF or shrink a photo?

It finds the right tool for you and gives you the link. The tools run in your browser: your files stay on your computer, and the connection doesn't edit files.

How do I know it works?

Ask your assistant: Which Downloadlink account is connected? It then names your email address and your plan.

On your account page the assistant is listed under Connected assistants, with when it last did something. Go to Connected assistants

Revoking a connection

On your account page, under Connected assistants, click Revoke: the assistant immediately loses access to your account. Then also remove Downloadlink in your assistant.
