Open DGN files — free, in your browser

DGN is the drawing format of Bentley MicroStation, widely used in infrastructure: roads, rail and water works. There are two kinds: the older V7 and V8, which MicroStation has used since 2001.

With the free downloadlink viewer you open a .dgn file directly in your browser. Nothing is installed, and without an account nothing is uploaded either — when you are logged in, the viewer keeps your file in My files.

What the viewer does with DGN files

A V7 file the viewer draws itself, with the same renderer as a DXF: you zoom, turn the levels on or off as layers, measure with snapping, search for text and save the drawing as PNG, SVG or PDF. A 3D file you see from above. For a V8 file it shows the preview image that MicroStation stores in it.

Good to know

The viewer does not (yet) show the drawing of a V8 file; export it from MicroStation as DWG, DXF or PDF. Line styles and line weights are drawn as thin solid lines, and B-splines, shared cells and raster images are not drawn but reported.
