DWFx and DWF are Autodesk's publishing formats: AutoCAD, Revit and Inventor use them to make a lightweight copy of drawings and models to send and have reviewed, for example in Design Review. A .dwfx is the newer form, a .dwf the classic one.

What the viewer does with DWFX files
For a DWFx and a classic .dwf the viewer draws each 2D sheet itself, with the sheets as tabs: you zoom, measure with snapping in millimetres on paper, search for text and save a sheet as PNG, SVG or PDF.
Good to know
Of 3D content the viewer only shows the preview image. Whatever it cannot draw, such as markup from Design Review, line patterns and some gradients and images, it counts and reports.
