Open SHP files — free, in your browser

A shapefile is Esri's old but still common GIS format: the shapes are in .shp, the data in .dbf and the coordinate system in .prj. Municipalities, regional authorities and land registry exports often supply it as a zip with those files together.

With the free downloadlink viewer you open a .shp file directly in your browser. Nothing is installed, and without an account nothing is uploaded either — when you are logged in, the viewer keeps your file in My files.

What the viewer does with SHP files

Open the zip with all parts (or just the .shp) and the viewer puts the points, lines and areas on a map. Coordinates in the Dutch RD New system and other systems from the .prj are converted; clicking a shape shows its data from the .dbf.

Good to know

A .shp on its own has no data and no coordinate system; for coordinates that look like RD, the viewer assumes RD New and says so.

How it works

  1. Click Open your SHP file above.
  2. Drag your .shp file into the window, or click to choose it.
  3. View it directly in your browser.
